COVID-19 Veteran Vaccine Information

For IMAA Veteran Patients Enrolled for Care at the DC VA Medical Center (VA MC):

The DC VA MC is operating Phase 1c of their vaccination plan and is currently contacting and scheduling vaccine appointments for enrolled Veterans ages 65-74 who are at high risk for hospitalization, illness, and death from COVID-19. When you are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, your local VA health facility will contact you. If you are a Veteran over 75 years old, enrolled for care at the DC VA MC, and have not yet been contacted to schedule your COVID-19 vaccine, please call the Vaccine Scheduling Line at 202-745-4342 to make an appointment. Please make sure to schedule two appointments since the vaccine is administered in two doses, 21 days apart. The DC VA MC Vaccine Clinic is currently operational in Clinics A and B for patients with appointments ONLY. If you have an appointment and need to reschedule, call the Vaccine Scheduling Line. Bring your VA ID card to your appointment.

[UPDATE: AUG 24 2021] The CDC has authorized the use of a booster Covid-19 vaccine for all patients who are immunosuppressed, or who are on immunosuppressive medications (see COVID-19 Vaccines for Moderately to Severely Immunocompromised People).

Patients who have received the Pfizer vaccine would get the Pfizer booster, and patients who received the Moderna vaccine would get the Moderna booster. The guidance is currently unclear for those patients who have received the J&J vaccine.

As of September 20th, boosters will become available to the general population for those who have had their last dose of the vaccine 8 months or longer ago. They will be rolled out in the same order as the original vaccinations: nursing home residents, health care clinicians, and those aged 65 or older. (see COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot).

This rollout is contingent on FDA approval and the approval of ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) at the CDC.

We will continue to provide you with more information about Covid-19 boosters as it becomes available.

[UPDATE: AUG 13 2021] With regards to Covid-19 vaccine booster doses (from the FDA): "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is scheduled to meet Friday (8/20) to discuss further clinical recommendations regarding immunocompromised individuals.

[UPDATE: APR 15 2021] Starting Sunday, April 18, everyone aged 16 or older will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccination, and registration will be accepted at VaccineFinder.org. {MORE INFO HERE}

[UPDATE: FEB 10, 2021] CVS Pharmacy has begun registering Virginians age 65 and older who are within the Phase 1b eligibility guidelines for vaccinations as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program for COVID-19 Vaccination. Eligible individuals can register at cvs.com/immunizations/covid-19-vaccine. CVS will begin administering vaccinations on Friday, February 12. [UPDATE: JAN 14 2021] As of January 14, 2021, the Covid-19 vaccine is available in Fairfax County, Virginia to groups 1a and 1b, including people 65 and over and younger groups with underlying medical conditions. Please go to www.vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-vaccine for more information.

[UPDATE: JAN 11 2021] Beginning Monday, January 11, the Fairfax Health District is vaccinating phase 1a and priority groups in 1b (people 75+; police, fire and hazmat; corrections and homeless shelter workers; and people living in correctional facilities and homeless shelters). [DEC 21, 2020] We are all excited about the development of Covid-19 vaccine. Pfizer, and now Moderna, have received Emergency Use Authorizations to have their vaccines administered. Inoculations have already been given for the Pfizer product.

Many of you have asked about when the vaccines will be available for you, and whether the vaccine can be obtained at the office. There are two resources that are very helpful in answering questions about vaccine distribution:

We have applied to be providers of the vaccine. At the current time, we are in Phase 1a of vaccine distribution. Health care workers and residents of long term care facilities are to receive vaccines in this phase.
